From the Desk of President Don

FROM PRESIDENT DON

This Thursday speaker will be Michelle from Redfish. It will be nice to get an update on masks and PPE supplies. Thank you to all Rotarians who have been making masks for our community. I am encouraged at times to see the increasing number of people wearing them!

Apologies about the Tuesday night social invite not getting out! We will do one more next Tuesday night 7 PM and realizing that the weather is getting more and more summer like this may be our last social unless we have a reasonable attendance.

I believe we are still in need of several committee budgets before Lori will be set for next year please take care of it if you have not.

My understanding from our DG Andre’ that there will be fewer District Zoom meetings and for those of you looking forward to this Thursday’s meeting with Paul Chapelle, he has not yet committed to that timeslot. I would encourage you to check out his website,  < peace revolution.com >, as I’m finding it very innovative and enlightening.

Thank you to the work parties that have been cleaning up the library garden and the crew that worked to clear debris from the Fishing Hole cement walkway. I would like to recognize those who contributed their time and effort at this Thursday’s noon meeting!

Our Scholarship Committee awarded three scholarships of $1000 each to three of our high school seniors. The awards event was Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM. It was a recorded event and you should be able to be seen on HHS website. Congratulations to Skyler Bond, Colby Marion and Rio Shemet Pitcher. I am proud to be a member of Rotary which consistently supports the youth in this community, as we see through the Youth Exchange program and our involvement with RYLA, especially this year thanks to Beth Trowbridge and her committee in the sponsorship of the district conference and these scholarships!

Not to forget all the Milli and her committee do as well.

I hope everyone will continue to take the necessary precautions following CDC and local guidelines. observe social distancing ,and the wearing of masks. It will be an interesting time as we are slowly re-opening the State, but let’s not become complacent!

Be safe!

~Yours in Rotary ~

Rotary District 5010 May Governor's message

I hope this e-mail finds all our District 5010 Rotarians doing well. May has arrived!  We say goodbye to the snow, and hello to green trees, endless blue skies and another glorious Alaska  summer!

The past 6-8 weeks or so have been a blur.  Who could have imagined the dramatic changes each of us, our families, our fellow Rotarians and our communities have had to make in such a short period of time. Alaska is now in a period of transition right now.  While we are eager to have life return somewhat to normal, many of us are rightfully concerned about so many things that are uncertain still.

Many Alaskans are still facing unprecedented impacts from COVID-19. Tens of thousands of Alaskans have lost their jobs, and are turning to nonprofits for the first time in their lives. The most vulnerable people in our communities need us now more than ever. I would like to thank the many Rotarians who have already contributed to our Rotary Cares Disaster Relief Fund, a partnership with the Alaska Community Foundation and the Rasmuson Foundation.

To date, Rotarians have contributed over $14,000 towards our goal of raising $25,000 for D5010 COVID-19 response efforts. We need the help of more Rotarians to help us achieve this goal.  Please go to: < https://Rotarydistrict5010.org > to donate today.  For every dollar contributed, D5010 receives a 1:1 match from the Rasmuson Foundation. There is a widget on the left that will take you directly to the donation portal.  You may also use this link: <  https://alaskacf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=3514 >. Explorer users please use Chrome instead.  Internet Explorer may have difficulties.

Many Rotarians are still working from home or remotely.  Summer plans for many will not involve travel outside Alaska.  Airline reservations are reported to be down over 90%.  High School graduations (including for my oldest grandson) are being video-taped for later playback on Zoom, and birthdays are being celebrated with Drive Bys.

Things are going to still probably look very different for us in the days, weeks and months ahead.   Masks and social distancing will play a big part of life moving forward for the next 6-18 months.

Many Rotary clubs in Alaska are beginning to discuss next steps.  While Zoom has provided evidence that our clubs are adaptable, and technology makes it possible to connect with our members and keep our members engaged, many long for face to face fellowship. Many of our clubs have successfully pivoted in the past several weeks to keep club members involved and informed.

Among you on this email are some of the greatest club and district resources and brightest minds in our Rotary District.  I encourage clubs to embrace innovation, transformation, and change, while embracing the enduring principles that have always made Rotary the "Place to Be".  Some clubs are now discussing a hybrid approach for future club meetings, fellowship, service, and fundraising, based on how their club conducted business prior to the pandemic and how they're conducting business now. What is your club doing to pivot?

D5010 will continue to provide you with the best guidance and support that we can in this ever changing landscape we find ourselves in. As District Governor, my team is proud to support your team.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me, the AG assigned in your club, and other talented and dedicated district leaders. There are many opportunities before each club and our district.

In the next few weeks, I will be contacting each of our 38 Club Presidents to thank them for their leadership, discuss the health of their club, barriers they may face due to the pandemic and their club's plan for the coming weeks.   Please share with your club President and President-Elect any guidance, suggestions, and support needed from D5010 that will position your club well as this Rotary year wraps up and transitions to the 2020-2021 Rotary year.

Sincerely,
Andre' Layral

D5010 Governor
2019-2020

Please check out below, some information about ZOOM and "ZOOMJacking or ZoomBombing".

If you have downloaded ZOOM, please be sure to update it, as ZOOM has tightened up the security of the program.  In addition, should you host a ZOOM meeting, please make certain that ENCRYPTION is turned on.  ZOOMBombing often takes the form of unwanted or unknown persons breaking in on an ongoing meeting, making statements (often profanity laden) or playing videos (usually pornographic), to disrupt the meeting.  It is easily prevented.

I wanted to pass this along. I know of some legitimate concerns with the Cub using ZOOM which has been expressed by some members. Hope this will put some minds at ease.

Please use these FBI recommended precautions when using ZOOM:

As individuals continue the transition to online lessons and meetings, the FBI recommends exercising due diligence and caution in your cybersecurity efforts. The following steps can be taken to mitigate teleconference hijacking threats:

  • Do not make meetings or classrooms public. In ZOOM, there are two options to make a meeting private: require a meeting password or use the waiting room feature and control the admittance of guests.
  • Do not share a link to a teleconference or classroom on an unrestricted publicly available social media post. Provide the link directly to specific people.
• Manage screensharing options. In ZOOM, change screensharing to “Host Only.”
  • Ensure users are using the updated version of remote access/meeting applications. In January 2020, ZOOM updated their software. In their security update, the teleconference software provider added passwords by default for meetings and disabled the ability to randomly scan for meetings to join.

If you were a victim of a teleconference hijacking, or any cyber-crime for that matter, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Additionally, if you receive a specific threat during a teleconference, please report it to us at tips.fbi.gov or call the FBI Boston Division at (857) 386-2000.

Here is an FBI summary to be aware of:

Being a greeter is a great way to learn names and have a chance to say hi to everyone who comes to a meeting!  And we all appreciate an interesting poem, saying, words to a song, etc. to inspire us for the day.

Thank you for helping us have a great meeting!

Bulletin Information:
If you have anything to put in the Bulletin, please get it to me no later than Saturday.  I am trying to have the Bulletin out Monday evening, when possible, as most of my Wednesdays are full, and I cannot work on it until late at night.  I am trying to have the Bulletin be more for Club members and friends of the Club, and the Web Page be more for the general public.
