Greetings Rotarians:

Passing of Will Files

It is with great sadness that I write of friend and fellow Rotarian Will File’s passing this week.  Will was a tireless advocate for others and our community. Many years ago, Will hosted an exchange student that just happened to be a famous Japanese Scupltor.  Yoshigi wanted to sculpt with glacier ice. A large chunk of glacier ice was dragged from the lake at Grewingk and Grewingk Man was created A year later Will and Martha Ellen visited Yoshigi in Japan. Thereafter, Will traveled to the Russian far east and later in 2007 helped establish the World Health Fairs which have now been held in Fiji, Mexico, Mongolia, the Philippines, Russia, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States. Will served the club in numerous Rotary roles including Rotary President, District Scholarship Committee, District GSE Chair and D5010 Grants Chair. Will receive Rotary’s prestigious Service above Self award in 2017. Will was born in Tanana, Alaska. He will be missed.

We were fortunate to have a presentation last week from Homer High School Principal Doug Waclawski who informed our club about his flexible approach to education during the pandemic. This week we will hear from Laurel Hilts, Public Relations/Marketing Director for the Seldovia Village Tribe. Next week our presenter is Jan Keiser, Director of Public Works for the City of Homer. Ms. Keiser will speak on Homer’s various urban trails.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the construction of the Poopdeck Trail which is now open. Fellow Rotarians assisted in the construction of the trail, the signage and earlier this week the first of three memorial benches were installed on the trail.

Don’t forget to buy your peony flowers. Sales will be ongoing at the Homer Chamber of Commerce from 10 am to 2 pm Thursday July 29 through Saturday July 31. Bouquets are $20 a bunch.

Enjoy your week. See you Thursday.

With gratitude,

Bernie
